The eastern state of India, Odisha is all set to see the functioning of another government medical college. Including the new Sri Jagannath Medical College and Hospital (SJMCH) on the holy land of Puri, it will be the 8th government medical college in Odisha. The college has been built on an expenditure of 300 crore and stand on a property of as big as 33 acres of land and SJMCH Puri admissions are supposed to start from 2021-22.
Dr. CBK Mohanty, Director of Medical education and Training said that the college is ready to function with all the classes, laboratories, library, etc completely ready. The District Headquarters Hospital will be linked with the medical college as mandated by the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) and has been updated accordingly.
The college will have the capacity to intake 100 students per year. With SJMCH Puri admissions, the overall capacity of the state will be 1350 in the government set up and 700 in the private setup. Currently there are 7 government medical colleges functioning in the state other than AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. There are also two more medical colleges under completion in the districts of Kandhamal and Kalahanadi.
