In a budget session at Rajya Sabha, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan stated that a total number of 157 medical colleges in India are under implementation. Out of these 157 medical colleges, 58 colleges are in first stage of implementation, 24 colleges are in the second stage and 75 colleges which were announced recently are in the third stage of implementation.

The minister also added that there were 50,000 medical seats in the country till 2014 and an additional 30,000 seats have been added in the last six years. With the implementation of these new colleges, more seats will be created and added to the list. The government policies to create these seats also depend on the National Medical Commission’s assessment of the required number of medical colleges required in the country.

A total number of 22 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have also been sanctioned under the Government. 17 of these 22 AIIMS are under various stages of implementation over the last seven years, the minister added. The Modi Government has also sanctioned 75 new medical colleges in India in the deprived sections among the 157 medical colleges where there isn’t any government or private medical college. The Centre supports 60% expenditure of these 75 medical colleges.

Among the stage three colleges, four medical colleges in Karnataka have been sanctioned in the districts of Chikkamagaluru, Haveri, Yadgiri and Chikkaballapura with intake capacity of 150 MBBS seats each.
