PGDM or MBA – Dilemma for Management Aspirants Continues

After completing graduation, many students have confusion in their mind regarding which management program to choose – MBA or PGDM? This blog will give you some insights into differences between the two.

MBA or PGDM – Which is a better option?

MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a management degree course offered by the institutes affiliated to the universities whereas PGDM (Post-Graduate Diploma in Management) is a management diploma course offered by the colleges that are recognized by the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). Even IIMs offer PGDM and not MBA because they are not part of any University.

Management colleges offering MBA Program have to follow an academic curriculum designed by the University while the institutes offering PGDM have the flexibility to design their own curriculum within the parameters prescribed by the AICTE. PGDM colleges can change their syllabi anytime and introduce new set of courses depending on the market demands while the MBA colleges have to strictly follow the curriculum designed by their respective University.

Which course is the best for management aspirants: MBA or PGDM? Well, experts say that the value of course depends on the institutions than the degree itself. An MBA from a well-established Central University or a State University is advantageous given the institution has experienced faculty and best infrastructure. At the same time, a PGDM from top colleges has a brand value and is easily accepted by the industry.

Is PGDM equivalent to MBA?

PGDM is considered equivalent to MBA only when the college offering it has accreditation from AIU (The Association of Indian Universities). Nowadays, PGDM certificates of some top institutes are being considered equivalent to MBA for higher studies like M. Phil or Ph.D.

While choosing the institution, management aspirants should look for the brand of the management college. The brand indicates its practices that provide excellent learning environment for personal development and its networking opportunity help management students reach its alumni and industry very easily.

Whether you choose MBA or PGDM, both are recognized and offer ample employment opportunities. It’s advisable that you get in touch with career counselors who can help you choose the right management course. Once you have selected the right course, opportunities come knocking at your door.
